 Callao is at the heart of Venezuela’s richest gold region and the trading center for gold and diamonds. There are hundreds of smaller gold mines around the village, as well as a few large ones (the biggest produces three tons of gold per year). The nearby legendary El Dorado is today a forgotten and poor town but still very interesting for its mythical atmosphere. [map]
