Ephesus was a major port city on the western coast of today's Turkey. By the late first century A.D. it was the fourth largest city in the Roman Empire. The Temple of Artemis, the largest building of the ancient world (according to Pausanias, a Greek traveler and geographer) and one
of the Seven Wonders of the World, stood here. The city is also important for the Christians, because Paul made it his base, and it is believed
that the nearby house was the last home of Mary, mother of Jesus.
