Merida lies at the foot of the Andes, marking the beginning (or the end) of the mountain range reaching all the way to Tierra del Fuego. It is a large, but friendly city with that unmistakable student-life feel. Because of the beautiful mountains, including a 5007m-high Pico Bolivar, it is one of the favorite tourist destinations. It is also home to the highest and longest cable-car system in the world that takes you to the altitude of 4700 meters. [map]
